It is law within the UK that every item of precious metal sold such as Platinum, Gold, Silver is stamped labelling the item with the type of metal it is. Platinum pieces which weigh less than 0.5 grams, 18ct Gold and Palladium pieces weighing less than 1.0 gram and Silver pieces weighing less than 7.78 grams are except from hallmark.
At Diamonds Factory all our products are hallmarked as per UK hallmarking law from London Assay Office (The GoldSmith Company)
Where Hallmarking Began
The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office is the oldest assay office in the United Kingdom. It has provided hallmarking services since The Goldsmiths' Company was founded in the 1300s. The company received its royal charter in 1327 and ranks 5th in order of precedence of the 12 Great Livery Companies of the City of London.
Hallmarking dates back to the 1300s when Edward I of England passed a law requiring any item made of silver, which was offered for sale, to be at least of equal quality as that of the coin of the realm (silver currency). The wardens of The Goldsmiths' Company were tasked with visiting workshops in the City of London to assay (test) silver articles. If these articles were found to be below standard they were originally destroyed and the metal forfeited to the King. If they passed, each article received the King's mark of authentication - the mark of a leopard's head. By 1478, there were several hundred workshops and merchants manufacturing silver articles in the City of London. It was not possible for the wardens to visit them all so the merchants were ordered to bring their items to Goldsmiths' Hall for testing and marking and a permanent Assay Office was established in the building. This is the origin of the term hallmark - struck with the King's mark at Goldsmiths' Hall.
In 1544 the Goldsmith's Company adopted the King's mark as their town mark and the mark of the leopard's head is now internationally recognised as the mark of this assay office.
Today
The Goldsmiths's Company Assay Office is still based at Goldsmiths's Hall and remains the oldest company in Britain to be continually trading from the same site. However, it also has two satellite offices; at Greville Street in Hatton Garden in the heart of the London jewelry quarter and within a high security complex near London's Heathrow airport. It now has a new off-site facility within the Dalston-based jewelry manufacturer, Allied Gold. This is the first time in the Assay Office's 700 year history that it has opened permanent hallmarking services on a customer's premises.
In addition to hallmarking, the office has now expanded its range of services to support the jewelry trade and enforcement authorities. It offers a variety of specialist analytical services including nickel, lead & cadmium testing, antique silver dating, non-destructive compositional analysis, plating thickness measurement and a melt and assay service for scrap precious metal carried out in their fully independent on-site laboratory. Other services offered are a jewelry valuation service, laser marking, trading standards assistance, high quality photography and a comprehensive range of training and educational seminars, lectures and specialist events.

Engagement Rings For Women
Solitaire Diamond Rings
Diamond solitaire engagement rings are one of the most popular choices. They are defined by a single center stone set on a clean band. The focus remains entirely on the diamond, making cut and quality especially important. Round cut is the most popular for its sparkle, while oval, princess, and emerald cuts offer different visual effects, from soft elongation to sharp geometry.
The setting plays a key role in this style. Prong settings, typically with four or six claws, allow maximum light to reach the diamond, creating an eye-catching sparkle. Bezel settings, where the metal surrounds the stone, offer a smoother look with a modern edge, while securing the diamond.
The minimalist design of solitaire rings makes them special, showcasing the diamond at its fullest.
Halo Engagement Rings
Halo engagement rings feature intricate patterns where a circle of smaller stones surrounds the central diamond. This design amplifies the overall sparkle and creates the illusion of a larger center diamond. The surrounding halo reflects light inward, adding visual dimension to the ring.
The halo can be styled in any cut; classic round halos offer a balanced look, while geometric cuts set with smaller stones add contrast. This style is unique for its ability to combine visual impact with skilled craftsmanship, offering a highly decorative engagement ring.
Vintage Inspired Rings
Drawing inspiration from design elements of earlier eras, this style is defined by intricate detailing and refined craftsmanship. Vintage engagement rings are characterized by features such as milgrain edges, filigree work, and engraved bands that add texture and character, creating a layered, decorative appearance. The settings often incorporate smaller accent diamonds arranged in delicate patterns and metalwork that beautify the overall design.
Diamond cuts such as cushion, oval, and old European styles are commonly used to complement a vintage aesthetic. What sets this style apart is its sense of depth and artistry. Each detail contributes to a ring that is expressive and distinctive, blending historical influence with modern construction.
Men's Engagement Rings
Solitaire Rings
One of the most classic styles in men's engagement rings is the solitaire diamond ring. It features a single diamond set in a structured band, creating a clean, focused design. Unlike the raised settings of women's rings, men's styles typically use secure settings such as bezel, flush, or channel. These settings keep the diamond level with or slightly within the band, offering protection and a smooth surface suitable for daily wear.
The style is paired with a larger-carat diamond, broader bands, and finishes such as matte, brushed, or polished metal. The minimalist, balanced, and clean design makes this style unique, allowing the diamond to stand out.
Side Stone Rings
Designed with additional diamonds set along the band, side stone rings introduce subtle detail while maintaining a structured appearance. The stones are arranged in a cohesive pattern along the central stone, decorating it and creating a sense of rhythm.
Secure settings, such as channel or flush, are commonly used to keep the surface smooth. The presence of side stones enhances the overall look of the ring by adding depth and sparkle.
Customize Your Engagement Rings
Customizing your engagement ring offers the opportunity to create a design that reflects personal style and meaning. Instead of selecting a ready‑made piece, customization allows you to choose every detail, from the diamond shape and setting to the band style and metal, and also add elements that you feel are important to your relationship. This approach ensures the ring is intentional and tailored.
When designing a custom engagement ring, you can choose additional details, such as side stones, engraving, or unique design features, to further personalize the piece and make it truly one of a kind.
Custom diamond engagement rings are especially valuable when you want a specific combination that is not easily available or when you want the ring to reflect a personal story and preference. This process allows flexibility in balancing design, budget, and quality while ensuring the final result is considered and distinctive.
At Diamonds Factory, our customization service is guided by our experts who walk you through every step of this process. They work closely with you, offering advice on design, diamond selection, and craftsmanship to bring your vision to life.
